Digital Practice and Culture Module.

Project Proposal

Name: James Bihan

Assignment / Module:

Concept:

For this assignment, I’m choosing to take shots and produce a one minute piece of video at a music event in a bar, night-club or even a pub.
It could be at an event where Dj’s are playing dance music of some kind or it could even be a gathering of people watching a band, maybe shots of people going into the event and following it right through until the end of the night showing all the different stages.
When I’m making the piece of film I would like to walk around where the event is being held so it will be very atmospheric, it will be really good to take shots and film with all the different tones and colours of lights.

Outcomes:

My objective is to capture dynamic, intense and interesting shots that allow you to see how people are enjoying the night and to see if it’s invigorating.
I want to produce a number of photographs around the venue, when people are dancing, at the bar getting drinks, stood outside. I’m not really too sure how many shots yet though.
The video will be filmed on different nights I go to and I’m going to edit them together so it could be a mixture but I think this will give a good effect, I didn’t think I’m going to use the sound of when I’m filming but I’ll use different music tune, so that it helps it all blend together.

Research:

For research, I will look at photographers who have good experience with shooting in nightclubs during an event, the best settings and equipment to use. Being aware that you’ll be taking shots in a nightclub where there are so many different things happening.

Resources:

I will be trying to find out what will be the best equipment to use, but i’ll try with my
  • Canon 550D
  • 18-55mm lens
  • Samyang Fish-eye CS 8mm 1: 3.5
  • Youngnuo Digital SYD - 0808 light

I have also been using a
  • Canon 6D
  • 24-105mm lens
  • Canon Speedlite 580EX II
  • 50mm lens

Action Plan: Include experimentation and opportunities for several shoots

Planned to go and watch a band playing in a venue on Old Market St
2nd June
Really good gig and at quite a large venue, which was good for filming.

Research into music event photography

These were taken by photographers who work for the company Decoy Media, they're really good pictures and I think you're able to see the vibe of the event, you can't see anyone's facial expressions but you're able to see the movement of people when they're dancing.

The red laser light shining down from the top righthand corner stands so well and it does draw your eye into the crowd.

I'm not really too sure what technique was used to shoot this and it looks like it's a DJ with somebody else playing behind him, such a good effect with the different tones and colours of light.

It works so well with how you can see only one girl as she's dancing.

A nice light effect from all different directions in the background, it's similar to the other three images above the light is shining on them from the front so they're quite dark almost like shadows because of the being from behind.

Two Photos shot in the Printworks club in London

Event Photographs I've shot

These are my first shots taken in the bar The Love Inn in Stokes Croft, it's a good venue which to big and you're able to move around quite easily, it was quite busy but I was still able to get where I wanted. I definitely need to use a flash with a diffuser on a slow shutter speed, also a lower ISO would show less noise which you're able to see in these images.

These were taken at a different venue, Lakota also in Stokes Croft and it's much larger with a lot of different rooms and as you can see the light is completely different, it's a lot darker and quite a challenge getting a shot I was happy with and also seeing what people were doing.

This was taken as I was walking from one event to another right in the centre of town, I think it's a really nice shot looking down the street, especially with the different colours of light on the buildings, the only thing is there are no people walking about and nothing's happening at all.

I decided not to video at this point in time due to factors that I have not considered, such as being unsure of what method/technique to use, being more prepared with the appropriate equipment needed

One minute long piece of video

This was taken during a gig from the start to the finish, I spent time filming from different areas during the night to try and get different viewpoints and also to capture people while they were dancing. Using feedback from group work, I decided to film an event as people entered the building and left at the end.

I edited the footage on iMovie and also added my own track instead of using the sound from when it was filmed, i don't think it would've blended together so well.

Evaluation

I decided to complete a one-minute movie on an event which was a gig, to show how people move throughout an event. Feedback from group work helped with my decision and my final piece shows an edited version of people using a space from the start to the end of a gig.
My research into images taken at musical events helped me to understand how the lighting was used to best effect and gave me some ideas for photographing people. Also where to stand to gain a good position to film from.
During this module, I feel that I have progressed with my ability to film and capture interesting images and in using my creativity. I have developed my confidence in filming particularly at live music events and hope to do a lot more.
