Task one and Task two,
Development work
To create a book i will need to decide on a theme taken from space, place or narrative.
Research
"Photography is a way of telling what you feel about what you see" Ansel Adams - www.photographyknowhow.com
I have decided to work under the theme of place and the idea for the book is to find historical pictures of North St and the Bedminster area, some maybe before WW2. I will compare these historical photos with pictures I have taken myself. It will be so interesting to see the difference and how things have changed over the years.
Here is an example of a historical photograph taken in the 1960s, although this was taken looking down Park St it is still an informative image of the era, and was also taken in black and white
This photo was taken right in the centre of Bristol by Baldwin street and it is really good to see it in colour which allows you to look into the image in more depth.
These are the initial first shots I have taken in Bedminster on North St
Dean Lane Skate park is situated right at the end of North St, this was at the start of my walk
This photo was taken as you walk up North St, the sign on the fish and chip shop stands out due to the bright colours used, red and yellow are both colours used to draw your eye in.
This is the tobacco factory and this building can be found at the end of North Street.
Book Layout ideas
I think I'll have Photos i have shot next to the older images so you're able to notice the differences, as opposed to turning the pages back and forth.
It works well with the image covering one page.
I want the book to almost look like a text book and have printed labels stuck inside, even like it would be something that would be handed out to people living in the Bedminster area. I have thought about even using something similar as a post label to have the text printed onto
These will be the final images that i'll be using for my book including the photographs that were taken as far back as the early 1900s
Dean Lane skate park

This picture of the tobacco factory was taken from looking at the building from a different side but i have managed to take a shot with no traffic or people walking by which makes a good comparison to the photo taken many years ago.
this worked so well with the white bike in the shadows and the shops in the background.
Again with this image i managed to take the shot with no traffic although there is one lady walking down the pavement with her pram, but at least it's not really busy.
In some ways i have almost tried to use the same style and composition used in the older photographs taken.
The tobacco factory right at the end of North Street and this building has been located here for a long period of time.
This was the Gala which is or was right across the road from Dean Lane skatepark, it has now been redeveloped and turned into flats and a Bar and restaurant. This picture must have been taken in the early 1990s.
These are such good photos of North Street and it makes you realise how much and been bombed during the war.
I would've thought this would've have been taken in late 1970s and it's so good that there's a lady taking a picture of the person who's taking the shot of the lady walking down the pavement.
In this image it seems like the Bedminster Shopping Hall is what would now be a supermarket, especially with the tithings on the sign.
I think this old photograph would have been taken in near where Dean Lane skatepark is now, just because of the large chimney in the centre of the image
Evaluation
This assignment has really help with experimenting with different techniques, it was quite a challenge trying to create the book though. it did take me quite a long time to come up with the idea but i am really happy with the final out come.
Walking up and down North Street was great as i found myself looking at all miner of different buildings, angles to shoot and how the composition would look, also i wanted to kind of recreate some of the older photographs that i have used in the book.
It was amazing to see how much North Street had changed over the years, especially after the war.
