Photographing ourselves (Photographic Techniques) Resit

Task One and Two
Documentary Photographic Project

For this project, I need to take images related to work. Firstly, I have made a decision on who I can contact regarding the documentary and have sent out inquiries, at present I am waiting for the replies.
I have organized to follow a farm worker who for the purposes of this documentary I will call John. John will be spending the day working at a farm not too far away from where he lives, on the Mendips.
I will begin with John's day at the farm and take shots at certain times during the day.

These are the 10 images shot during the day I spent with John whilst he was at work.

This was John arriving at the farm in the morning.

After driving the 4x4 we drove on into a yard where John needed to do some maintenance work.
I liked this shot especially with the sign on the right hand side while John opens the padlocked gate, which shows you how only employees can access the land.

This was taken just before we drove through the gate, this image has a good depth of field and good focus on the wing mirror where you are able to see Johns reflection as he walks away.

This is one of the older farm buildings which was damaged by a fire many years ago, it's quite a good shot with how the dark woodland on the righthand side helps to bring the building to the foreground.

Again this a really nice depth of field but you're able to see John working quite well in the background.

The last two photos were taken whilst I was stood inside a barn and I thought it would be interesting to create a composition which gives a dark kind of frame and draws your eye towards John whilst he's working.

I wasn't to sure about including this shot as I could have used a better angle to get better lighting as it seems quite dull.

I'm really happy with this image that was taken at the end of the day. I think the light and colour have come out so well, the composition is great with the roof going right down to the centre of the picture from the righthand corner, also John is looking across the picture as opposed to looking directly at me, which is more natural.

This photo was taken as we drove back to the farm where we started earlier on in the day.  I decided to get out of the vehicle and take a shot as John was driving down through a track. The sunlight hits the side of the 4x4 well and makes it stand out with the shadow in the background.

The three final images chosen for this assignment are as follows:

Task three

Location Portrait

200-word report and also a risk assessment on location.

After some consideration, I decided to choose a skateboarder as my subject for the portrait.

In terms of location, I decided to use an area that has been created by the skateboarding community, this is located under the M32 in Bristol.

I will need to think about the time of day that I take shots due to light conditions at the time of year; at present (summer) means that it is lighter for longer in the evenings. However, the location is undercover so it would be preferable to take shots at the brightest time of day. I will need to consider the direction of the sun and where shadows fall.
Another point to think about will be what time to take the shot in relation to how busy the location is, I will visit the location a few times to see when it will be the best time for me to take shots.
I have now visited the location and have realised it is best to taking shots during the afternoon due to the light levels

Risk Assessment

Date: 19.07.18

Task Location Portrait

Location: below M32

Hazards
Precautions

Adverse weather
Check forecasts

Lone working
Let people know where I will be and when

Slips trips falls
Be aware of obstacles and other people skating, choose a quiet time.

Violence and aggression
Check who is at location and avoid if necessary.

These are some shots that i took at the location under the M32, i decided to go there in the afternoon as i thought that would be the best time for light. Because it's underneath the motorway it wouldn't be very good for light in the evenings or at night unless i was to take lighting with me. There are streetlights nearby although i don't think it would work

This is good, as you're able to see the size of the skatepark, the light is far to bright on the lefthand side.

I leant right against the wall when i took this shot and the light shinning underneath the bridge shines off of the graffiti on the large pillar

I really like the combination of darkness underneath the M32 and the bright light it gives such a good effect.

I decided to take a shot when i was not stood right underneath, this helped me to decide on how i would use the light.

Although this was not part of my project, i wanted to take shots because the shadows, light and pillars made such an interesting image.

Lighting diagrams

This was the second time i went to the DIY skate park underneath the M32

Like I said before I always wanted to take shots similar to this looking under the motorway with river in the middle.

I experimented with higher and lower apertures as you can see in these two shots.

This time i actually met people down at the M32 that i knew and my plan was to take a portrait shot of one of these people.

This was taken later in the evening

This was my final choice of a Location Portrait, I decided to take a shot whilst Mark the Skateboarder was actually doing a trick on the block. I made this decision because it worked so well with the location I had chosen.

These are screen shots of the process of adjusting the image to monochrome

This was the final image after adjusting it to monochrome in Lightroom

Evaluation

This was a great assignment I realised how much needs to be considered when shooting on location, especially in terms of weather, lighting and time of day.
I am pleased with how my final image came out, although in some ways i would have preferred to have left it in colour.
