For this assignment, I would like to research and understand the area of mediation and promotion really well which will help me to understand how it is such a big part in a career as a professional photographer.
By setting up and designing a website I will be able to begin creating my own personal brand, which will not include a logo as I would like to stay away from a commercial identity.
Also, it is going to be interesting to show how using social media will be a big part of self-promotion and I am going to start up a page on Instagram which is going to be constantly updated to make I keep people interested in filling me and looking at my work.
The artist statement will be part of my website and I want to include it so I am able to explain my work and what I would be able to offer possible clients.
Show promotion
This is a picture of the layout of our gallery space and it shows where each of us will be to hang and display our work at the final show. Each of us has been given a space that has different sizes to display and
The space I have been given is marked D on the image above and the size will be 2.4 m.
I have decided to display my work by having three prints next to each other, then three below, then three below and then another three below again, so a total of nine prints.
This is a drawing of how my prints will be hung within the centre space gallery.
These are some pictures of the poster we will be using for the final show, after looking together as a group we decided to use Tristans portrait as the main image on the poster.
this is a Black and white print out below.
We decided in the end after discussing it together to put the FOTOGRAD text up to the side of the image and not over the top above the subjects head.
Also, the details below of where and when the exhibition will be are across the bottom below the image.
I thought that this works a lot better as opposed to it being over the top and covering such a good portrait shot, the blue also draws your eye in and then you read the information below.
We created a page on Instagram and followed 30 'friends' from our own page and also a Facebook page to display our own work.
This is a picture of possible food and music we will be having during the Final Show.
Brand identity
Produce a case study of brand identity used by an individual / Small businesses within the photo imaging industry. Comment briefly on each of the following sections (200 words each);
- design (logo, layout, typography)
- Social media strategies used
- Online and print media
- Provide screen grabs and physical examples
- Online and print media
- Provide screen grabs and physical examples
These next three screen grabs are a really good example of a Photographers design, logo, layout and typography. His name is Ragnar Hartvig, and some of his clients have been furniture manufacturers and interior designers.
To build up his own personal brand/identity he has also worked with a graphic design company which has helped him to show some his personality and show is a range of skills and abilities.
These are some flyers and leaflets and you are able to see how they have combined his shots of furniture with his name, it has been laid out in a particular way with a certain type of font, and also R and H are in a different colour.
As you are able to see below it shows how it can be used as a logo. The typography has been designed so well, and it's not just been chosen from a selection on an application like Microsoft Word, for example, it almost looks as though it has a diagonal line going through it.
It shows you how you could actually use your whole name but by using a certain type of layout and design it is possible to create a logo that could be used on a card, poster, leaflet and a website.
Below are some examples where social media can be used to your advantage. the photographer is Adam Chandler who is a music photographer and these images show his Instagram page. I was able to get on to this page by going through a link on his website.
Instagram is such a good way of posting your images online, you are able to do this as often as you like. so many people can look at your work and write a comment on what they think about it.
Above shows his profile page which gives you information about him. At the top, just to the right of his profile picture, it shows you how many posts he has made, how many people are following him, this then allows all these people to see his images as soon as they are posted.
When a picture is posted you can describe how and where it was shoot and what type of equipment was used. On the screen grabs, I have chosen there are some portraits and what you do is type in #portraits and this will then your work will appear when people search for portraits on Instagram.
If you post images quite often it shows other users and they will become interested and start to follow you, sometimes you might have other photographers or even companies who like your work and they can quite often get in contact with you. This is a really good way of promoting yourself to all manner of different types of people and there is no fee at all.
These examples of print media are done by the same graphic design company who worked with the photographer who I previously looked at. You can see how so many different things have been printed, like letterheads, business cards, brochures, flyers, and stationery.
The design and colours used are probably chosen to combine well with his photographs, it really does show your professionalism to possible clients and even to customers, you are working with.
Personal brand concepts and logo
designs
These are some logos designs that I have looked at, they are a good example of how you can use quite a simple design when it comes to a logo
This image above is my favorite design although I do think it should have your name written somewhere.
For my own personal brand concept, I have chosen not to use a logo. I think that using a logo makes it seem like you are quite commercial. Other photographers that I have looked at especially the two that I have been in contact with to be my mentors do not use logos at all and this is how I've chosen to do it myself the images below show the home pages on their websites.
Andy Ford and Chirs Johnson have Just their names in quite a large font and photographer or photography written underneath
The image below is a screenshot from Adam chandler's website who is also another photographer who I was in contact with as he worked in the same area that is was working in for my final major project.
For the design of my website, I have chosen to use this design on my home page and also on my business card as well. I much prefer it to have no link or similarity to anything corporate or commercial and in some ways its straight to the point.
This image below shows the home page on my website.
And this is the front and back of my business card.
I am really happy with the design and layout of the text I have chosen for my business card, although one of the main things I will need to change when I design my next card is my email address: fixed721@icloud.com, as this does not sound professional at all really. The address I am planning to use is jbihan-photo@icloud.com, which will look and sound a lot better when I become a professional photographer.
Evidence of social media presence
These screenshots below show my Instagram page and all of the different shots I have posted over the last few months. I didn't realise how much feedback you would get from each individual image you would post.
I have realised how this really does help for promoting yourself and I have had so many people who have started following me because they like the different images I am posting.
Different photographers, galleries, clothing labels, and also even people who are involved with music, in terms of social media I think this is so much better than using facebook because it's more of a social networking site in which people share information.
This is the link to my website: https://fixed721.wixsite.com/mysite
My artist statement
My subject matter is music events showing the progress from start to finish, capturing different moments during the night showing what the atmosphere is like.
This will include portraits of people involved with putting the event on, playing at the venue and also people whom I know who have their own record labels.
As I know people within the well known Bristol music scene I have always liked and chosen to follow and go to certain events that I have a strong liking to myself.
I like to take shots of people during the event so I am able to show reactions and responses which show their enjoyment, energy, and movement during the night and event.
I will get to the event at the early stage and as the night goes on I will always move around, showing different lighting and atmospheres.
Evaluation
This module has been such a good way of helping us understand how much mediation and promotion are such a big part of being a professional photographer, there are so many different things that need to be used to make sure that you promote yourself in the best way, whether it be online or even on print.
It has made me realise how much social media can help with self-promotion especially with the feedback I have received when posting my different shots onto Instagram, I actually started to post images on quite regularly to keep people interested and attract more followers.
Before starting this module I was quite unaware of how much you need to focus on the promotion, creating my own website and looking at different photographers site's makes you realise how possible clients can look at work and projects you have worked on before and get in contact with you quite easily.
